Grover "Curtis" Simpson

Grover Curtis Simpson, affectionately known as Curtis, was born February 22, 1950, in Charleston, Missouri to Hubert and Ruth Betts Simpson. They both precede him in death.

A graduate of Charleston High School in Charleston, Missouri, he not only excelled academically but also on the basketball court. The love for the sport remained over the years.

Curtis’ deep personal relationship with God guided his life and reflected in who he was. He was a member of Opportunity Church of God in Christ in Charleston.

His dedication and work ethic were evident in his impressive forty-year career. Curtis worked as a gauge operator at Phillips Pipeline in Jefferson City, Missouri. After retirement, he embraced a new chapter as an official food critic alongside his sister, Phyllis. They approached this role with enthusiasm, exploring new restaurants several times a week and sharing their culinary experiences with friends and family.

An avid sports fan, he could often be found cheering on his beloved New York Yankees and San Francisco 49ers. He loved traveling to attend Charleston High School's away games, creating lasting memories.

He had a unique charm, characterized by a wonderful sense of humor and a straightforward manner that made him easy to talk to. Family meant everything to him, especially his momma, she was his everything. Curtis was a devoted father, and grandfather, with his grandchildren being the center of his world. While fiercely committed to his family, he also cared deeply for his friends, maintaining close ties with his high school pals over the years. He embodied the saying, "Always have your back," and was never shy to point out when someone was off track, showing his genuine concern for others.

Curtis lived by the values of God, life, and family, embracing every moment to the fullest. He took pride in his style, always dressing to impress and passing down his love for fashion and shopping to his brother-in-law.

In quieter moments, he enjoyed listening to jazz and church music, finding comfort and inspiration in the melodies. His favorite hymn, "He’s Sweet I Know," resonated deeply within him, reflecting his enduring faith and love. He will be deeply missed.

On Wednesday, November 12, 2025 while in Decatur, Illinois, Curtis was taken from our midst at the age of 75 years, eight months, and 21 days.

He leaves to cherish his wonderful memories his children, Antoine (Marsha) Simpson and Toya Simpson of St. Louis, Missouri, Jarrett (LaRoya) Simpson of Sacramento, California, Tariah Simpson of Charleston, Missouri and Kariah Simpson of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, his brother, Wilbur “Butch” Simpson of Kankakee, Illinois, his sisters, Phyllis (Eldon) Hackman of St. Louis, Missouri, and Priscilla (Ray) Jackson of Bourbonnais, Illinois, 11 grandchildren, one great grandchild, his partner, Amelia Rigney of Charleston, Missouri, and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives, and many friends.

Friends may call Saturday, November 22, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. until the funeral hour of 12:00 noon at Opportunity Church of God in Christ in Charleston, Missouri with Pastor Steve Betts officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Oak Grove Cemetery with the Williams Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
