Melvin Joseph Neal, affectionately known as Patch or Kane, peacefully passed away at his home in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on Monday, March 16, 2026, at the age of 69. Born on December 19, 1956, in Cape Girardeau, he was the beloved son of the late Billy Joe Swan and Betty Jean Neal.
Melvin was a known legend. He served in the United States Army stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado. While on active duty, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Marksman Badge w/M-16 Rifle Bar, and Sharpshooter Badge w/Grenade Bar. He was honorably discharged in 1975.
Melvin was a simple man with a heart full of kindness. He worked for the city of Cape Girardeau, but his love for cooking was well-known, and he shared his culinary talents generously. He worked at his sister’s barbecue joint, Alkel’s, where his skills delighted many. He also had the honor of serving as the top chef at the Governor’s Mansion for years under Governor Mel Carnahan, a role that reflected his dedication and exceptional abilities in the kitchen.
Beyond his professional life, Melvin cherished time spent fishing, finding peace and happiness in the quiet moments by the water. His warmth and gentle spirit left an unforgettable impression on all who knew him.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his daughter, Elisha Turner, his granddaughters, Breianna Smith and Miracle Turner, brothers, Ricky Cardwell and Willie Edwards, sisters, Denise Frelot and Barbara Spicer, nephews and nieces, Anthony and Laticiia Robinson, Marshall and Tomorra Egson, Kyley Egson, and special friend, Ophelia “Fefe” Smith, cousins, other nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Melvin’s life will be held at a later date. Those who loved him carry forward his memory with deep affection and gratitude for the joy he brought to their lives.
