Robert Dixon

Robert Earl Dixon, known affectionally as "Rob" was born March 6, 1955 in Charleston, MO to John & Ella Mae Wilson Strayhorn. He was one of ten children. His parents, brothers, Thomas, William, Joseph, Donald, and sister, Gloria, all preceded him in death.

He was a graduate of East Prairie High School in East Prairie, MO where he was active in baseball.

After high school, Rob enlisted in the United States Army. He served his country honorably for 20 years, earning many accolades during his time before retiring in 1995. Those accomplishments include the Army Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Lapel Button, the Good Conduct Medal (6th AWD), the NCO Professional Development Ribbon “3”, the Army Commendation Medal (2nd OLC), the Southwest Asia Service Medal W/3 Bronze Stars, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, the Air Assault Badge, and the Overseas Service Ribbon “3”.

Murphysboro, IL became his home where he retired from Menard Correctional Center after 20 years. During this time, he also served as the Auxiliary Chief of Police.

After retirement, he and his wife, Carolyn Gadson Dixon, made Fairview Heights, IL their home.

Rob enjoyed fishing, time out on his boat and riding his motorcycle. Always the jokester, he kept everyone laughing with his antics and stories. A good man who always helped those in need.

On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Rob made his transition from his earthly home to his heavenly one while at home with the love of family and friends at the age of 71 years, five months and 13 days. The days of pain and sleepless nights have all passed away, in exchange for everlasting joy, peace and happiness.

Rob leaves to cherish precious memories, wife, Carol Dixon, three brothers, Roy Dixon of Las Vegas, NV, Oliver Dixon of Myrtle Beach, SC and Benny Strayhorn of Jefferson City, MO, one sister, Deloris (Keith) Bulliner of Fairview Heights, IL, three children, DiMeggo Mims of MI, Chautauqua Newman of Blue Springs, MO and Charles Newman of Salina, KS, two grandchildren, Talia Pfeifer of Memphis, TN and Pelar Pfeifer of Blue Springs, MO, along with a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held Saturday, September 5, 2026 from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at the Williams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Interment will immediately follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Charleston with full military honors. The Williams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
